Summer Food Service Program |
|
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides nutritious meals and snacks to children
during the summer months. This federally funded food service program helps children who live
in eligible areas receive the same high quality meals during the summer as they get during the school
year. Local sponsors oversee the production and distribution of meals to children at sites such as
schools, churches, parks, and playgrounds. Organizations which quality as sponsors receive funds
to pay for meals and snacks for children. They also receive training and technical assistance to
help start and operate the program.
In order to become a sponsor, you must complete an application, attend sponsor training (usually
held in March), and ensure your organization can manage the program effectively. A sponsor also
needs: Kids; children 18 years old and under can receive summer meals. Also, disabled persons
participating in state educational programs for the mentally or physically disabled can receive
meals. Meal Sites: Meal sites are approved as “eligible” during the application process. The sites
are usually parks, schools, playgrounds, gymnasiums, community centers, churches, apartment
complexes, or day camps. Staff: Employees are needed to manage the meal sites, to prepare the
meals, and to manage the administrative portion of the Summer Program. Bookkeeper: The
bookkeeper compiles financial and administrative records to comply with the regulations of the
program. Management: When the SFSP is well-organized, it is easier to manage. The
administrative staff must be willing to coordinate and communicate with their program staff and
with State Agency staff in order to receive technical assistance and support if needed.
